Public discontent over corruption and a surge in violent crime have plunged Peru into a political crisis. In an overnight congressional impeachment session, lawmakers removed the unpopular President Dina Boluarte from office. Peru's new leader is Jose Jeri, a 38-year-old lawyer with little political experience. Jeri has now been sworn in and has vowed to tackle crime, seek national reconciliation, and ensure that fair elections are held next April.
